Wilbert W. Meyer, 90, of rural Sumner, died Sunday, May 25, 2014, at Tripoli Nursing & Rehab in Tripoli, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Friday, May 30, 2014, at Faith United Church of Christ in Tripoli with Rev. Marilyn Sargent officiating. Interment will be at 3:30 p.m., Friday at Harlington Cemetery in Waverly. Friends may call from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, May 29th at Rettig Funeral Home in Tripoli and for one hour preceding services at the church on Friday.
Wilbert William, son of Louis and Ella Fasse Meyer, was born April 24, 1924, in rural Bremer County, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church-Siegel. On February 16, 1947, he was united in marriage with Darlene Menzel at Warren Evangelical United Brethren Church of rural Waverly. Wilbert and Darlene had attended the Evangelical and United Brethren Church in Sumner many years ago. Wilbert was a lifelong area farmer and member of the Farm Bureau. In his younger years he enjoyed playing basketball. He especially enjoyed having family and friends visit at his home, and taking short trips with his family to Clear Lake. Later in life, he and Darlene did take some lengthier trips out of state on a few occasions.
Wilbert is survived by one son, Ivan (June) Meyer of Tripoli; four daughters, Elaine (Michael) Fink of Traer, Shirley (Patrick) Schlievert of Iowa City, Marion (Randal) Bohr of Tripoli, and Lisa Meyer of Papillion, Nebraska; seven grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; one brother, Mervin (Marjorie) Meyer of Sumner; a sister-in-law, Donna Mae Meyer of Fredericksburg; and a brother-in-law, Marlin (Cleo) Menzel of Waverly.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Darlene, who died October 16, 2012; a daughter, Lois Ann and son, Dennis Ray, who died in infancy; his parents; a brother, Arlin; and a sister-in-law, Audrey Spooner.
